Of course there were slipups, though they tended to be missed by us kids in the moment, instead being explained to us later during family get-togethers. The most infamous slipup, which gets more airtime at our family events than any other, is the time the adults of our extended polycule were piled into the living room to nail down the logistics for our “Poly Pagan Summer School.” This was their answer to the question “What are we going to do with more than a half dozen seven- to twelve-year-old, high-energy, intelligent youth for the summer when most of us still have to work?” The answer was to have the parents who were not currently working full time spend their days with the children doing academia in the morning and extracurriculars in the afternoon. School was ending soon, and they needed to sort out the final details. They had done all of the logistics, scheduled a time to meet and were unsuccessfully letting the children occupy themselves; they needed ten uninterrupted minutes to be adults, and we couldn’t give them more than five at a time without asking for something.
Meanwhile, I was then hosting more than half a dozen high-energy, intelligent kids in my messy room. The air was thick with hormones and body odor, and we were getting restless. I was fearful of what damage might be done to my room if I didn’t get everyone’s attention, and so I looked to my brother. We shared one of our nearly telepathic moments where I volun-told him he was about to become a sacrifice for the greater good, and he took a deep and heavy sigh of resignation. I pulled out a jump rope and said, “How much of this rope do you all think it would take to cover Royce’s entire body‽” Five minutes later, he was successfully wrapped from neck to ankles with enough left over for me to hold as a leash as we unsteadily guided his hobbled form down the hall. As we spilled into the living room like the release of a clown car, we succumbed to our giggles, completely forgetting that in our family when a child wanted to enter a conversation they stood and listened for a break in speech to say “excuse me” and would then be acknowledged. I tried to regain enough composure to show off my brother, as many of the adults suppressed giggles of their own, looking from me to my primary parents, who were slowly shaking their heads. In the midst of the chaos, my frustrated Momma Phoebe closed her eyes and without looking at us kids said loudly, “Will you just take your tie-up games back to the bedroom!”
We kids heard the definitive edge in her voice that sent us bolting back towards my room, toppling Royce over and half dragging him out of the room. Once out of sight, we heard a chorus of uproarious laughter from the living room. Though confused and intrigued, we didn’t want to incur any parental wrath and stayed in my room until they were done.
